How I Work
What to expect when working with me
We begin with a 15 minute chat, either over the phone or on zoom. This is where you can tell me a little about what you are looking for, ask questions, and get to know me. I will then give you an idea of what I believe will help you. This could be a one off coaching session, a set of 3 - 6 counselling or hypnotherapy sessions, or ongoing psychotherapy. Sessions are 1hr for individuals, 1.5hrs for couples and can be weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. Evenings and weekends, and last minute sessions are usually available.

I do most of my work online, and also offer face to face sessions in Newton Abbot, Exeter and Totnes. I also offer walk and talk sessions, and home visits.

Contract
As a registered member of the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP), I abide by their legal standards and will provide you with a therapy contract. This confirms the therapy program we have agreed on, including times, dates, location and cost. It also includes the legal aspects around confidentiality and my insurance details. You will gat a copy to keep and I will keep a copy on record.
Your First Session
This is where we get to know each other, talk about what you want to achieve and make a plan to move forward. We will discuss the style of therapy you feel drawn to, what you feel would not work for you, and make a start at exploring your issue in more detail.
Therapy Sessions
The purpose of therapy is to support change and growth. I will invite you talk about your issues and encourage you to explore your feelings and thoughts. The work can be difficult at times, as often the answers lie in the places we try to avoid. I am empathetic and supportive, I will use my skills to guide and gently encourage you to explore your emotions, your past and how it might be affecting your present, and your goals for the future.

When we are working with grief or trauma, I will provide a safe space for you to process your emotions in a therapeutic way. Safety is my priority, and I will usually suggest we do some simple grounding exercises at the end of a session to make sure you feel in a good place when you leave, if this feels right for you.
In couples therapy I will witness and guide you through disagreements, acting as a mediator to ensure you both get equal opportunity to talk, be heard and understood.
Ending Session
Through experience I have learned that it is hugely beneficial for you to have an ending session to review the therapy. It is an opportunity for you to look at the goals you came with, if they changed, how they were met and how you feel now. You will be able to reflect on the tools and strategies that have worked best for you, recognise your increased self awareness, and affirm what you are taking forward. For couples it is a great way to share your successes, and step into your new way of being.
